THE NATASHAS
death disco

before the club, before the cd, there was public image limited's 'death disco'. this is not a cover version, or a love song.

"death disco was inspired by hazy memories of gary numan and john foxx. i remember them as a child, thinking only of them as de-humanised mechanoids (not as real people), offering a dystopian and horrific view of the future. numan, particularly, in 'down in the park' singing "oh look there's a rape machine / i'd go outside if it looked the other way / you wouldn't believe the things they do" or in 'are friends electric' with his mechanised friend that had broken down and that he'd "left in the hallway". john foxx on 'underpass' opened with "standing in the dark / watching you glow / lifting the receiver / nobody i know". these are the lyrics that spawned 'death disco', the handjob hand-jive, the bomb-drop boogie, the suicide salsa and more."
